Where children learn to code by building real things

Coding academy · KS2 · Year 5 & 6

Code Hamsters is a hands-on coding academy for children aged 9–11. They learn Python with Raspberry Pi and robotics kits, taught by computer science students and experienced software engineers.

Our principles

What we believe in

The promises we make to every child and family, and the standards every tutor works to.

Creativity and exploration come first

Children are makers, not followers of instructions. We give them room to explore, ask “what if?” and take their projects in their own direction.

Mistakes are how we learn

Every programmer writes bugs. Getting things wrong is encouraged, because finding and fixing mistakes is where the real learning happens.

Every difference is celebrated

Every child thinks differently, and that’s a strength. All backgrounds, abilities and ideas are welcomed, celebrated and explored together.

A healthy relationship with technology

Children learn to be in control of technology, not controlled by it: creating with it rather than just scrolling, and understanding how it works.

Safeguarding comes first, always

Children’s safety and wellbeing come before everything else. Every tutor is DBS-checked and safeguarding-trained, and our safeguarding policy is open for every parent to read.

Kindness and teamwork

We build together. Children share ideas, help each other out, and learn to give and receive feedback kindly.

Everyone grows at their own pace

Beginners build up step by step and confident coders are stretched with extra challenges. Progress is measured against yourself, not anyone else.

Families are partners

We keep parents and carers in the loop about what their child is learning and building, and we’re always happy to talk.

For children

Build it, test it, fix it, and have fun doing it

Every session is about making something. Children learn to code by doing: experimenting, solving problems and building projects they’re proud of.

Write real Python

Not just drag-and-drop blocks. Children write Python, the same language professional software engineers use every day.

Program a Raspberry Pi

Take control of a real, pocket-sized computer and see code make things happen in the real world.

Build and code robots

Use robotics kits to build, program and test robots, then tweak them and try again.

Solve problems together

Work in small teams to crack challenges, hunt down bugs and experiment with ideas.

Earn badges and certificates

Complete challenges to collect badges, fill up reward charts and earn certificates to take home.

Go further

Racing ahead? Extension tasks keep confident coders stretched, while beginners build up step by step.
